JP has developed both of these initiatives and tied them together for more effective and continuous instruction. The research indicates that after school programs as well as summer school programs yield little in dramatic student gains. In addition, the learning in both of these initiatives is often fragmented and not tied to the ‘regular’ school curriculum. JP Associates connects the summer school curriculum to the Extended Day program- not simply an after school program. The summer school is designed to provide both rich experiences in language and history, but also has an intensive academic program that directly aligns with the particular needs that each child exhibited during the school year. In both programs, groupings of students are determined by individual testing and then individual placement. Through consistent communication with the parents during the summer months concerning our students’ progress, we ensure that these same students continue in our Extended Day program and continue to get the same intensive instruction that they received during the summer months. Timely formative assessments are key to the success of these programs.
