School improvement and school reform can’t be restricted to the academic domain.  In every struggling school there exists the potential for truly dramatic gains…given a positive culture that values learning and mutual respect.  That’s why building that Positive School Culture is part of the Responsive Professional Development Model™

JP’s training in creating and maintaining a Positive School Culture takes two distinct paths:

·         Creating  a Positive School Culture among school staff

·         Creating  a Positive School Culture among students

The first approach, focusing on staff interactions, expectations, and teaming directly impacts the overall effectiveness of the school, particularly in the case of schools serving students in poverty.  According to Wheelan and Kesselring (2005), …”the manner in which faculty members work together is…influential…”(pg. 329) particularly in schools serving high-poverty populations.

 

Student interactions are also critically important in maintaining a Positive School Culture.  As the staff work toward a unified vision and purpose, structures must be put in place to support and nourish positive social interactions, behavioral expectations, and academic achievement.

JP’s Positive School Culture domain includes training and coaching in:

-          Schoolwide Behavior Management

-          Social Skills

-          Classroom Management

-          Staff Relationships and Team Building

-          High Expectations for Achievement

-          Creating and Maintaining a Clear Focus and Mission (also included in the Leadership Domain)
